Chapter 9

The revenant god Shul’s expression was indiscernible, for he was but a living shadow cloaked in pitch-black darkness, but if his face could have been seen, irritation and perhaps a bit of fear would have been visible across his lips.

In life, Shul was a thing of beauty. Picturesque, statuesque, standing twice the height of a normal man, but with a figure lean yet profoundly muscular. He had other impish qualities which only added to his charms, such as having the hooves of a horse and the head of a powerful ram. Devilishly handsome he was, so much so that he had had his way at one point or another with almost every god and goddess in Thune’s pantheon—and even some of their concubines.

He believed that his beauty and magnetic charm would keep him a friend to all the gods, but he was wrong. He was betrayed by them, struck down in jealousy for the sin of being too glorious. Shul was unjustly accused of abusing his powers, driving the followers of his brothers and sisters mad with lust, or shattering their minds with the intensity of pain that he was able to cause. These things were true, of course, but hadn’t he done some good for them, too?

Because of him, war was almost wiped out as practically no one would be willing to head out onto the battlefield knowing what pain awaited them. The sensation of a spear piercing skin in the time of Shul was an unfathomable agony, far more feared than death itself.

And yet, he became their scapegoat, their pariah. Then they killed him, and he tasted the pain for himself. He felt the spear of his brother, Yip’karn, God of War and Violence, and that treachery he could understand since he virtually made his domain obsolete. But then there was his own sister and lover, Kish, the Scorpion Goddess of Love and Atonement, she who once watched the Heavenly Gate

itself—her trident pierced his back. Even now, he wondered how the duplicitous goddess was atoning for her treachery.

But it wasn’t just the two of them. A dozen gods slew him, each beating or stabbing him in turn in some apparent act of solidarity.

Betrayed by his siblings, his lovers, his friends—he could never have anticipated pain like that.

And then word came to him in his tomb of his father’s divine retribution, the Culling of the Gods, and the First End. Shul was honored by that, that his death should mark such a seachange within the pantheon. Father even visited his tomb from time to time.

Amar’nak, the King of the Gods, God of Life and Death himself

—the being whose loins he had sprung from—had come to see Shul, often at first, but by the time Billy had walked into his tomb, it had been over a millennium since his father’s final visitation. And that’s when the new gods, these fledglings, started to come to claim his cores. Sent by his own father, he knew.

Even Amar’nak had moved on. This
